On Wednesday, November 23, 2011, the staff of Habitat for Humanity of Durham were hosts for a dinner before Trinity's Thanksgiving worship service. This annual event provides an opportunity for Habitat and Trinity to share thanks for another year of cooperative sharing in the community.

On Sunday, August 21, 2011, we celebrated the anticipated arrival of Andrew James McGiverin with Sarah, Brian, and Hannah McGiverin in the church parlor.
- TUMC Annual Picnic
Trinity's Annual Picnic was held on Saturday, August 16, 2011, at Piney Wood Park. Russ Odom grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. The Fellowship Committee provided condiments and beverages. The congregation brought side dishes and deserts. There were games for the kids. A great day!
- VBS - Hometown Nazareth
Trinity UMC Vacation Bible School, June 26 - 28. Hometown Nazareth, where Jesus Was a Kid! Each day, family members became part of history as they saw, heard, touched, and even tasted what it was like to live in Jesus’ hometown! These experiences made God’s Word come alive with new meaning for all who participated!

Kyle Wilson and the Rockets played their final tournament in Durham at Valley Springs Park. Stars of this show are Kyle and his littlest fan, Amanda.
- Father's Day and the Only Burger truck
In celebration of all of our Fathers, the Only Burger Truck parked in front of Trinity UMC at 12:15 on Father's Day. We all had burgers for lunch!

On Sunday, May 8, 2011, Trinity honored all our Mothers, biological and spiritual, at a special lunch. These photos were taken by David Taylor.
- Alice! A Mad Musical Adventure
Durham Family Theatre production "Alice! A Mad Musical Adventure" was presented in Trinity's Fellowship Hall with our own David Katzenmeyer (Caterpillar and March Hare) and his daughter Krista (Fawn).
- Chili Cook-Off 2011
Trinity's Annual Chili Cook-Off features the recipes of the best chili cooks in the congregation including vegetarian, spicy, very spicy, smokin', beef, buffalo, with beans, without beans. This year we had a professional judge. Donations were accepted for Trinity's mission to the Bahamas to participate in a Habitat for Humanity build for orphans.

Trinity's Chancel Choir and Trinity Ringers held their annual Epiphany party at Hill House, hosted by Eve Stelzenmuller.
- Pancakes for the People!
On certain Sundays, Trinity holds a free community pancake breakfast from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please call the church office (683-1386) to volunteer! Donations fund the purchase of supplies for the breakfast. Volunteers set up on the previous Saturday afternoon and greet and eat with our guests on Sunday morning.
Special thanks are due Trinity volunteer greeters, cooks, and servers. We also thank Brueggers Bagels, 1831 & 1833 Martin Luther King Jr Pkwy, who donate dozens and dozens of bagels. We are now in the third year of partnership with Brueggers in this ministry!

- Baby Shower for Lauren and Alex Crowell
Trinity families came together to celebrate the expected birth of Lauren and Alex Crowell's first child, a baby boy. Lauren has directed the children's ministry for about 12 years. Alex has served on the administrative council and as its chairman. This was a joyous family affair! Photographs by Anne and Harrell Tice.

On Sunday, December 5, 2010, 2:00 to 4:00 pm, the women of Trinity United Methodist Church, Durham, NC, gathered to celebrate the coming Christ and to remember and honor the women of the congregation who died during this year. Special music was provided by Duane Osgood and Doug McVey. Circle 10 of Trinity's UMW were hosts this year.

- George Newton, Renaissance Man
On Sunday, September 19, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. Trinity United Methodist Church honored George W. Newton for his contributions to the church and the community.
Our own "Renaissance Man," George Newton is an inventor, a designer and woodworker, an educator, family man and philanthropist. In 2006, the Durham Chamber of Commerce presented Mr. Newton the Civic Honor Award stating that "with an inventor’s mind and a passion for innovation, George W. Newton changed the face of Durham's economy."

- TUMC Welcomes Pastor Mills
On Sunday, June 27, Trinity's congregation welcomed their new pastor, Taylor Mills; his wife, Betsy; and daughters Rebecca and Emily.
- Countryside and Coast of Ireland and Scotland
As you can see on the map of our tour, we left from Dublin on the east coast of the Republic of Ireland and traveled by bus southwest. We followed the coastline north to Galway Bay and Castlebar. From there, we crossed into Northern Ireland and drove through the lake district on to Londonderry. From Belfast we headed to the port of Larne to board a ferry to cross to Cairnryan in Scotland. We visited Glasgow, Fort William, the Isle of Skye, and Loch Ness on the way through the Scottish Highlands to Edinburgh.

Throughout the trip to Ireland and Scotland, there were special events for the group, usually including dinner and entertainment appropriate for the location.
- Churches and Steeples of Ireland and Scotland
Beginning in Dublin and ending in Edinburgh, this is a special tour of cathedrals and churches. Some are viewed from the tour bus, some from village and city streets, and a few include interior views.
- Scottish Highland Farm
The shepherd, Neil, has many border collies. I counted nine adult dogs and four puppies. Neil showed us how, with different whistles, he commands each dog to carry out different tasks. Some of our group tried their hand at sheep shearing. We fed the lambs and watched the puppies' attempts to herd lambs and ducks! Watch for the oldest puppy who is anxious to work with the adult dogs. Watch for the herding "slalom" by the working dogs.
- The Falkirk Wheel in Scotland
The Falkirk Wheel acts as the gateway to Scotland's Lowland canal network and is the place where the Forth & Clyde Canal meets the Union Canal. The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres
(79 ft), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight-story
building. Operational and engineering details are available on the Internet.
- Glasgow Botanic Gardens
Glasgow Botanic Gardens date back to 1817 and moved to the present site in 1830. The Gardens were formed to provide a source of suitable plants for the teaching of medicine and botany at the University of Glasgow and this relationship continues today.

On Sunday, May 16, 2010, Trinity UMC held a special celebration in honor of the publication of I Walked the Sloping Hills, A Memoir by Walter A. Brown. Dr. Brown read selections and signed copies of his book.

This wedding day began with brunch where the star of the day was a simple wooden swing! The wedding took place at Covenant Presbyterian Church. For the reception we moved to the Levine Museum of the New South. On Sunday, we gathered with family and friends at the home of the bride's parents. A happy, happy time!

Creating a Plan and Sticking To It: No More Missed Opportunities

Serendipity is the effect by which one accidentally discovers something fortunate, especially while looking for something entirely unrelated. While good accidents do happen, we can’t live our entire life expecting accidents to direct us. Creating a plan or having goals is the better way to safeguard against missed opportunities. Having formerly served North Carolina as the Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Transportation and Secretary of Revenue, presenter Norris Tolson knows a thing or two about creating a plan.

On Sunday, February 7, 2010, Trinity's congregation and staff gathered in the Julian S. Carr Fellowship Hall to honor Olive Joyner as she moves from her position as Assistant Pastor to a new position as committed and active member of the congregation.
Olive was presented a painting by David Taylor, member of Trinity, depicting Olive participating in one of the many ministries that she organized at Trinity.

- 2010-01-28 Mission in Haiti
Liz Allred's brother, Dr. Clarence Freed (appears in a red shirt in many of the photos), went to Haiti with the Souderton, PA, Mennonite Church mission team. Their mission team works with an organization called 'Water for Life." They were in a town called Posse Bois D'Orme when the earthquake came and then moved to the hills into La Bal'iene. They came back to Port-au-Prince where they set up a medical team. They ran out of supplies in only 6 hours and did not have enough food to hand out to the people. They were asked to be at the airport at 6 am that Monday and were flown out by Spirit Airlines to Fort Lauderdale, FL. From there they had to find their way home. The church has committed to send teams back and help that first town rebuild. (Information and photos provided by Liz Allred, member of Trinity.)
- 2010-02-03 Fellowship Hall Cleanup Crew Extraordinaire!
Trinity's Fellowship Hall was off limits for several months while a new heating/cooling system was installed. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, an energetic and dedicated team cleaned floors, walls, furniture, kitchen and its appliances (including a pipe!) until everything sparkled and shone. This service, the Children's Sabbath, was led by the children of Trinity. The anthem was "You Are My Shepherd," sung and signed by the children of the church. The sermon was "Feed God's Sheep" delivered by Rachel Hall Utz, Leland MacDonald and Emily Palmer.

The marriage of Jerry and Stephanie Bynum's daughter Mary Catherine Coulson and Dustin Cantrell on Saturday, June 20, 20009, took place at the Kirk of Kildaire, Presbyterian. The reception followed at Renaissance Raleigh Hotel at North Hills.

On Tuesday, May 19, Trinity's Tuesday Club traveled to Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. Sue Yagel provided the photographs of the trip. Joining Sue on the trip were Joyce and Bob Gordon, Jane Mickey, Russ Odom (and Buddy), and Ron Schooler.
- Cousin Bert Watson's 80th birthday
On Sunday, April 26, 2009, Rev. Bert Watson's family honored him on his 80th birthday with a reception in the Fellowship Hall, Osceola United Methodist Church, Lancaster SC. Bert has served many churches, even after retiring, and members of many of his congregations were present.
- Family Visit in Charlotte
On Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26, we visited our cousins Judy and Jake Grubbs, and aunt Edna and uncle Myron Hamilton. Jake's sister Mary joined us for dinner on Saturday. We attended Sunday worship at their church and had lunch afterward.

On Tuesday, April 21, the Tuesday Club traveled to Wilmington, NC, for the day. We toured the city by trolley, had lunch at The George on the waterfront, and toured Airlie Gardens. On the way home, we had a barbecue supper at together.

We celebrated 35 years of marriage on September 16, 2007. Instead of having a party or dinner out, we planned a trip to London and Paris. Here are some photos we wanted to share with you. - Habitat for Humanity
In October 2007, Trinity joined other Durham Methodist churches to build Habitat homes on Franklin Street. More than 20 Trinity members helped to construct two homes and feed the workers.

We attended a Church History workshop sponsored by the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the UMC.

As part of Trinity United Methodist Church's 175th anniversary celebration, former pastor and Durham District Superintendent H. Gray Southern preached on August 12, 2007. Following the service, member Annette Baker Morgan hosted a luncheon in honor of her daughter Jane Morgan's 16th birthday. Coincidentally, Jane was the first baby christened at Trinity at the beginning of Rev. Southern's tenure. With Trinity UMC friends Cordie and Homer Bass and Sue Yagel, we drove from Durham, NC, to Danville, PA, where we were joined by Betty Brown and headed for Boston.
